Artist Statement

Adenn Fox is a multi-disciplinary artist working out of South Buffalo. Using acrylic paint, alcohol markers, and pompoms she creates bright works full of color that yearn for a feeling of magic- balancing whimsy as a state of being while analyzing the complex bog of shame and trauma.

Featuring feminine characters, personal symbolism and pop culture iconography, her work leans into the surreal and fantastical. In the painting, Heirlooms, a canine statuette appears as a metaphor for turbulent family relationships and generational shame. Known as Staffordshire Dogs, these figurines were originally manufactured in pairs and became aspirational symbols for the Victorian middle class. Alone and separated from its original counterpart, this precariously set figure weighs on the mind in this loosely interpreted self portrait. Gold stars glittering across the cheeks cling hopefully to the most vibrant parts of the self. Clouds of hydrangea blooms support the dream from the background.

Miniature fruit, larger than life cats and fluffy mirrors encourage viewers to step through the looking glass and reflect on magic experienced as child-like wonder. Adenn uses pompoms as a tactile experience to pull us out of the bog, firmly grounding us in curious joy.

Magic disrupts rumination; its soft glow illuminating recovery and drawing the fantastical closer to reality. In her recent body work, the artist continually strives to subvert tired, adverse monologues, painting a more lucid, ever-growing portrait.
